Case Study: Exporting Li-Ion-Powered Farm Equipment to the USA – Robotics Project

- Project: Packing and Shipping of Second-Hand Farm Equipment
- Destination: New Jersey, USA
- Duration: 2 Weeks Outcome: 8 Containers
- Delivered: On Time – Project Success
John Pipe International received an enquiry through the website from a company based in the USA. They sought assistance in shipping second-hand farm equipment from the UK to New Jersey, USA.
At first glance, the enquiry appeared to be a straightforward shipment request. However, as conversations developed, it became clear that the project required a much higher level of technical expertise and logistical coordination than initially expected.
Project Challenges
After several exploratory emails, our team arranged a site visit to a farm in Chichester to assess the equipment. Upon inspection, we discovered that only half of the machinery was on-site. The remainder was located on two additional farm sites in the New Forest. It soon became evident that this was a complex, multi-site export project, requiring close collaboration between John Pipe International’s Hampshire export packing and freight forwarding teams.
A further discovery added to the project’s complexity: the so-called “farm equipment” turned out to be self-moving fruit-picking robots, each containing hazardous lithium-ion batteries.
Our Approach
Recognising the specialist nature of the cargo, our team conducted detailed measurements and hazard assessments at each location. This included verifying the condition and configuration of the lithium-ion batteries to ensure compliance with international hazardous goods shipping regulations. With comprehensive data in hand, our commercial and technical teams developed a tailored packing and shipping proposal. After two rounds of review and discussion, the client awarded John Pipe International the contract, confident in our ability to manage the project safely and efficiently.
Execution and Results
The operation was successfully completed over two weeks in September, involving the safe export of eight full container loads of equipment. Throughout the process, John Pipe International coordinated all aspects of on-site packing, documentation, hazardous goods management, and sea freight logistics. All containers were delivered on schedule to the client’s site in New Jersey, and the client provided excellent feedback, commending our professionalism, flexibility, and attention to detail.

This project showcased John Pipe International’s:
-
- Expertise in handling complex, multi-site logistics projects
