John Pipe International Wins Dorset Business Awards – Recycling and Waste Management in the Innovation Award Category

We are proud to announce that John Pipe International has won the Recycling and Waste Management Award in the Innovation Award category for Dorset, organised by Business Awards UK (Dorset Business Awards).

The award recognises the practical work our team has been doing to reduce waste and find valuable new uses for materials left over from our manufacturing processes. For us, innovation does not always mean creating something complicated. Sometimes, it means looking at an everyday problem differently and finding a solution that is simple, sustainable and genuinely useful.

Turning Waste Into Something Valuable

As part of our export packing services, we design and manufacture bespoke wooden cases, crates and other packaging. This work naturally creates timber offcuts and pieces of plywood that are too small or unsuitable for use in another packing project. Rather than simply treating these materials as waste, our team began looking for ways to give them a new purpose.

This led to two practical ideas – turning waste timber into Fire Pucks and using suitable waste plywood to make bird boxes for local schools, green spaces and community groups.

These projects helped John Pipe International secure the Recycling and Waste Management Innovation Award at the Dorset Business Awards.

Turning Timber Offcuts Into Fire Pucks

Our Fire Pucks are compact briquettes made from shredded and compressed timber offcuts and sheet materials left over from our production process. Instead of sending this suitable wood waste to landfill, it is processed into a practical fuel product. The finished Fire Pucks are consistent in size, easy to handle and simple to store.
By finding a useful new purpose for our leftover timber, we can reduce waste while making better use of materials that have already passed through our workshops.

This is a straightforward idea, but it shows how businesses can rethink their waste and see it as a possible resource rather than simply something to dispose of.

Creating Bird Boxes From Waste Plywood

We have also found a new purpose for suitable plywood offcuts left over from the manufacture of our wooden packing cases. Our team uses these materials to create bird boxes that can be given to schools, green spaces and community groups. The bird boxes prevent usable pieces of plywood from going to waste, provide new spaces for local wildlife and create something that communities can enjoy and learn from.

Sometimes, you come across a solution to a problem that is remarkably simple, yet has the potential to help both the community and the environment.

Simple Ideas, Lasting Impact

The Fire Pucks and bird boxes both began with one simple question – how can we make better use of the materials we already have?

By looking at our waste differently, we have been able to turn leftover timber and plywood into useful products that reduce waste and support the wider community. It is a clear example of how innovation does not always need to be complex. Sometimes, it comes from understanding your materials, challenging the usual way of doing things and finding a practical alternative.
